Anxious
I woke up early this morning, which was pretty amazing considering the last couple of days I have had. With Susan's wedding and taking care of two tiny babies; things have been rather hectic. Heading to the nursery, I first check on the twins, who are sleeping soundly, and then head to Darcy's crib. She's gone!

Quickly checking with the house-elves to make sure no one is feeding her and looking to make sure one of the other children wasn't playing a joke, I immediately head to the fireplace, throw in some Floo Powder and Floo call the Lupin residence.

"Tonks! Are you there?" I say, putting my head into the fire. I see Tonks look up from where she is making breakfast.

"Penny, what's wrong?" she asks, her face immediately filled with concern.

"Darcy's gone! I have checked the whole house, she's nowhere to be found!"

My heart is thundering loudly.

The baby is gone?

A true sense of panic washes over me- something I’d learned to quell years ago (pleasing Moody.)

What am I going to tell Harriet?

Who would do this? My mind races. Please don’t let Fenrir Greyback know about Darcy. Does Hilary have anything to do with this? Could she have orchestrated something before she was arrested? How will Harriet react? Will this set all her progress back?

I leave Ella to munch her cereal and I slowly ascend the stairs. Who do I tell first? Harriet? Or Remus? He’s bound to be furious. His whole life is about reforming werewolves in society’s eyes, and reforming society from a werewolf’s point of view.

It’s early yet. Maybe he’s not awake yet. Maybe I’ll just check on Harriet first, and then tell Remus so we can break the news to her together.

I pause outside her bedroom door and sigh. I tap softly on the door and push it open.

My eyes go instantly to her bed- already made. She’s awake already? I push the door open and look about the room. My eyes dart to the window, the cupboard, the dresser, where her wand is gone, as an increasing sense of panic rises in me.

I walk down the hall to the loo. The door is open. I race back down the stairs, quickly looking throughout the house and basement. Ellie pays me no mind, but holds the cat up to drink milk from her bowl. I check the lock on the door to find that is has been disturbed some time since last night.

She is gone. I freeze, rooted to the spot.

I hear the creak of the stairs and turn as Remus smiles and enters the kitchen. “How are my best girls today?”

“More cereal, Daddy!” Ella pleads, quickly pushing the cat to the floor.

“More cereal? How much have you eaten, and how much did Cassie get, hmm?” he asks, leaning over to pour more into the bowl. He scrutinizes the colourful box, complete with Quidditch stars flexing their muscles after eating a bowl of Magic Morsels!

“Oy! There’s no mushmellows in here anymore! I don’t want it!” Ella shrieks, folding her arms across her chest.

Remus smirks over at me. “Mummy probably ate them all,” he teases, before I watch his face fall. “Dora, what’s wrong?”

I have no idea what to say.

“C-can I see you in the living room for a moment?” I say, drawing my dressing gown around me, my bare feet slapping the floor as I make to walk past him.

“Dora, what is wrong?” he asks again, more intimately this time, placing on hand on my belly and slipping one behind my neck. “Is it the baby?” he whispers, swallowing hard.

I shake my head. “No, she’s fine. Please.” I grab my hand, linking my fingers through his, leading him through the archway toward the living room.

“What is it, Dora, you’re scaring me."

“Darcy is gone from Phoenix House,” I hiss, meeting his eyes. “And Harriet is gone.”

His eyes widen in surprise. “What? How do you know this?”

I absently tuck a lock of hair behind my ears. “Penny, she floo’d this morning to tell me about the baby, she’s just- missing. No other children were disturbed, just Darcy. I went upstairs to find Harriet and she’s gone. The bed is made up, her wand is gone, and the backdoor was unlocked during the night.”

He swears and rubs his hand over his face. “Remus you’ve got to find her. I don’t know what’s going on, but I hope that Greyback or Hilary haven’t any hand in this. Do you think Harriet might have done something rash?”

“I don’t know. She doesn’t seem like that kind of girl. I have to find her. Where would she go?”

I press a hand to my forehead shielding my eyes as I squint and think. “Anywhere she might have felt safe.”

He quietly interrupts. “I’d bet she went home.”

I nod. “You’re probably right. I’ll get Ella ready, see if there’s any update from Penny, and go over to Phoenix House. Meet us there.”

He cups my face in his hands and presses a kiss to my forehead. “Dora, be careful. Don’t do anything ill-advised. Let me be the Auror today, hmm?”

I roll my eyes exaggeratedly and sigh with a smile. “As hard as that will be- OK. I’ll be good. I’ll go straight to Phoenix House, I promise.”

“Good, send me your patronus if there’s any news and I’ll Apparate back straight away.”

After another quick kiss, he is gone.

I leave Dora hoping she won’t follow me. This week has been very stressful and I don’t want her to become agitated again. I think she is finally starting to calm down after my chat with Hilary.

I decided to Apparate at a safe distance from Harriet’s old home, I do not want her to become frightened and disappear – I may never find her or Darcy again. I walk slowly towards Harriet’s old home and debate whether she would have returned here at all. The house seems to be untouched from the night of Greyback’s rampage.

The front door is hanging off its hinges, windows are broken and shards of glass are glistening in the early morning sun. I can see bloodstains on the ground and it appears there are deep markings in the wood panel around the door, I feel my stomach turn as I realise that these are drag marks. One of Harriet’s family must have been pulled from the house to be tortured and killed.

I step over the threshold of the door and sneeze as the thick covering of dust on the carpet is disturbed. I notice footprints in the dust and follow them.

I walk slowly up one flight of stairs, my wand in my hand and my heart beating a little too fast. I take a calming breath and step onto the landing. I notice the footprints lead to the bedroom at the end of the hall.

I move towards the room but stop as I hear a baby’s cry and then Harriet’s voice. I quicken my pace and push the door open. Harriet is sitting in the middle of a bed rocking Darcy back and forth as she cries.

“Harriet,” I say gently.

“Please don’t be angry with me,” she sobs. “I didn’t know what else to do.”

“It’s okay,” I say approaching her. “Are you alright?”

“Yes,” she says, nodding her head. “I can’t give her away,” she adds, looking down at Darcy. “I hate him so much for the things he did to me, but its not her fault, I can’t punish her anymore. She is the only family I have left – please don’t make me give her up. Please.”

“I’m not going to make you do anything,” I say, tentatively sitting on the bed. “Everyone is so worried about you and Darcy, why don’t we got back to Phoenix House-“

“NO,” she shouts, moving away from me. “They’ll take her and won’t give her back.”

“You know I wouldn’t let that happen,” I say, moving closer to her. I am not sure if she will try to Apparate away and I want to be close enough to grab her and force her to take me with her.

“This used to be my bedroom,” she says suddenly, wiping her face. “The night the attack happened I was in here, I heard noises and then my mother screaming. I was so scared I wanted to hide but I went downstairs to find out what was happening and she was being dragged from the house, all I could see was blood and her face as she yelled at me to run, but I couldn’t move, I was too scared. I watched them kill her and I hadn’t moved an inch – I could have saved her.”

“No,” I say, “what happened isn’t your fault; you mustn’t blame yourself at all. Greyback is a monster, he is evil and I’m sorry to say he would not have let you escape, he would have had wolves stationed to stop anyone from leaving, staying inside probably saved your life.”

“For so long I wanted to die, I wanted the pain to end, the nightmares to go and my memories of him to fade but they didn’t until you told me that someone wanted Darcy. I haven’t been able to think of anything else since, my parents would want me to keep her, I know they would. Please Remus, I know you’ve done so much for me but I need your help again – please help me keep Darcy.”
16th-Sep-2006 06:11 pm (UTC)
“I will help but we have to return to Phoenix House,” I say touching her arm. “We can explain that you have changed your mind and you’d like to keep Darcy.”
“What if they say no?”

“They won’t,” I say, hoping I am right. “You have enough money in your Gringotts account for you and Darcy to live comfortably, you are working, have a home-“

“You mean I can stay with you and Tonks,” Harriet says.

“Of course you can,” I say, smiling. “We have more than enough room and having Darcy in the house will help Ella adjust to when the new baby comes along. Dora will love having you with us too. You know, she wanted us to adopt Darcy.”

“Will you be her godfather?” Harriet asks and I swallow with difficulty.

“I’d be honoured,” I say.

“And do you think Tonks would be her godmother?”

I smile and nod my head, “she’d love to – I meant what I said all those months ago, you are family now, we will always be here for you.”

“I don’t know how to be a mother, what if I’m rubbish at it.”

“You won’t be, I’ve watched you with Ella and I think you’ll make a wonderful mother.”

“Really?”

“Really,” I say smiling.

“Are the ladies at Phoenix House mad at me?”

“No,” I say shaking my head. “They are just worried, they care a lot about Darcy and you – I think they’d be happy to see you both, why don’t we go and sort this out.”

“I’m scared,” Harriet says looking down at Darcy.

“I know you are but Dora and I will do everything we can do you and Darcy will be together. Do you trust us?”

“Yes.”

“Good, we won’t let you down.”
16th-Sep-2006 06:13 pm (UTC)
I feel Ella let go of my hand as soon as the feeling of Apparition passes.

“Mummy, where are the kids? Are Tina and Rachael here today?”

I shrug and smile. “I don’t know, Twinkle, go find out.”

She disappears in a flash, just as Penny enters the room. “Is there any news?” I ask, knowing full well if there was, she would have Floo’d me by now.

“No, nothing. No sign of the baby. No other children were harmed or moved- just Darcy. Have you told Harriet?”

I swallow. “Well,” I begin delicately, “I have news for you. After you Floo’d, I went to inform Harriet and found her gone.”

“Gone?” Penny asks. “Do you think she’s OK? Do you think she took the baby?”

I wince. “Maybe. OK, probably. Our house wasn’t disturbed either. And if someone were looking for either Darcy or Harriet, they would not have been so cautious about the whole thing. I sent Remus out to look for her. She trusts him, and he knows better than me what it’s like to be a Lycanthrope and a parent.”

Penny lets out a breath. “I’m not comfortable with this yet, but I’m starting to feel a little better.” Her eyes dart to my stomach. “Speaking of which, I’d feel a lot better if you got off your feet and relaxed. Are you feeling all right?”

“I’m fine, really. No worries.” I ease into the nearest chair and sigh. “I told Remus to Apparate here straight away when he finds her. We guessed she might have gone to her old home. I guess the only thing there is to do now is sit and wait.”

Harriet, Darcy and I Apparate outside Phoenix House and we walk quickly up the stone steps into the building. Dora notices us first and rushes towards us. “Are you okay?” she asks Harriet.

“I’m fine,” she says timidly. “I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to make you worry.”

“It’s okay, I’m just glad you are both okay,” she adds, cradling Darcy’s head. “May I hold her?”

Harriet seems reluctant to hand over Darcy at first but then holds her arms out for Dora to take the baby. “I want to keep her,” she tells Dora.

I watch as a large smile spreads across Dora’s face and I can’t help but smile as she pulls Harriet into a motherly embrace. “That is wonderful, she will be happiest with you.”

“Will you teach how to look after her?”

“Of course I will,” Dora says glancing at me. “Remus will even help you with the 3.00am feed.”

I laugh as I slide my hand around Dora’s and squeeze gently. “I loved feeding Ella at that time; it gave us a chance to have a nice chat.”

“Remember the time Remus when you were so sleepy you tried to feed one of Ella’s dolls instead.”

“That’s not true Harriet,” I say blushing slightly. “Dora likes to fabricate stories to embarrass me.”

Dora and Harriet laugh as Penny steps out of an office and approaches us. She doesn’t appear to be too angry and I notice Harriet visibly relax and Penny smiles at her. “I’m sorry I took her,” she says. “But I didn’t know what else to do.”

“We have a couple visiting today in the hopes of adopting Darcy,” Penny says. “This is their third visit. They are childless and due to a medical condition they will never be able to have children. They are desperate for a baby and fell in love with Darcy the moment they saw her-“

“But I want her,” Harriet says.

“Is there anything that can be done?” I ask. “Harriet has been through so much these last few months, she doesn’t deserve to lose her child as well.”

Penny smiles kindly and nods her head. “I’ll see what I can do.”

"Harriet," I say, leading her over to the couch and inviting her to sit down. "Darcy is your daughter and if you want her she is legally yours." I smile encouragingly at her. "St. Mungo's has a wonderful parenting class which I can recommend to you, or you know that you can always come to me or the Lupins for advice. And I will be happy to babysit her anytime," I say, thinking of the full moons but not wanting to say it out loud.

"Thank you so much for your help, Penny," she says with a smile."And thank you for allowing me to have my daughter back."

"I know you are going to make a wonderful mother, Harriet. Just please feel free to owl me if you need help with anything at all. I know how hard it is to be a single mum and it's always good to know that you can count on someone for support."

Harriet's eyes filled with tears as she looked at her daughter laying in her arms, but it was obvious that they were tears of joy to all of us. Umbridge or not, this story had a truly happy ending.

I wince as I see the the couple looking at Harriet with baby Darcy. They have tears in their eyes and I can feel their pain. I start to go over to them, but then little Cormag goes over to them.

"Sad?" He asks, his blue eyes looking up at them.

Mrs. Hendricks bends down to face the little boy and wipes the tears from her eyes. "Yes, I'm a little sad."

"You have boo boo? Kiss and make it better?"

Mrs. Hendricks smiles at him and gives him a hug.

Standing, I go over to the them and smile softly. "I'm so sorry about this. I know that you were looking forward to adopting Darcy. No one could have foreseen this."

"It's okay, Penny. Even though it hurts us, Darcy belongs with her real mother," she said, looking down at Cormag, who had wrapped his arms around her legs. "Besides, I think maybe we have found someone who needs us."

Today is the day of my wedding anniversary, and though its a day of sadness for me, I have helped two families find what they have lost. I feel very happy for all of them.
